ALL400s Survey Produces Interesting IBM i Market Insight

IT Jungle this week takes an insightful dive into the ALL400s recent survey of the IBM i Community. While the survey size is small, it produces an interesting picture of the age demographics within the IBM i community.

Age Range Percentages:

  • 5% in their 20s
  • 11% in their 30s
  • 12% in their 40s
  • 36% in their 50s
  • 32% in their 60s
  • 5% in their 70s

Note: Percentages are approximate.

Key Takeaways:

  • 45% of the IBM i community is more than 10 years away from retirement
  • 25% of the IBM i community is between 6 and 10 years away from retirement

Things to Think About

  • While this is much harder to measure, there are individuals entering the IBM i community from other industries as well as crossover from other platforms.
  • Is this really that different from other platforms?
  • If your organization allows for your IBM i developers to work remotely, it makes hiring the talent you need that much easier.

Dive into the IT Jungle analysis and the ALL400s survey.

Digital Transformation

CTO Insights

To get the most of the IBM i, I think it’s important to look outside our community.

Not sure how I stumbled upon this interview, but I find it fascinating on a number of levels.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

Is formal education important? While many think it is, I think it can be – but does not have to be. This CTO’s story is inspiring.

Is there a difference between a CTO and a CIO? Yes, though the line can be a little blurry especially in smaller organizations. For organizations that are big enough, consider, “Technology is not a service, it is an engine.”

There is a need to align technology with business goals. Business goals and tech are one in the same. “Technology that does not serve a commercial purpose is really just an ornament. It can be pretty and even incredibly impressive, but you can not use it for anything.”

Biggest mistakes leaders make. The “biggest mistakes have all been with people. Not investing enough time with relationships and understanding what motivates and drives people.”

Most popular Node.js Frameworks

If you are an IBM i developer, developing using Node.js, or are looking to dive into the node community, have a look at the most popular Node.js frameworks for 2022. “One of the things you’ll notice throughout this post is that many of the frameworks mentioned in this article are based on top of a front-end framework. This is also referred to as a meta framework. So, what’s the deal with this, and why this approach?”

Best Node.js Libraries for Backend Development

As we work with small, medium and large sized organizations around the USA, we are finding a high percentage of them are considering Node.js as a viable path forward.

With that in mind, here is a list of some of the top Node.js libraries that are changing web development.

The best thing is that “all of these Node.js frameworks are scalable, which means they can speed up development while simultaneously improving performance across a variety of projects. The demand for web apps is expected to grow in 2022. As the need for web applications grows, developers are experimenting with different frameworks to make use of new capabilities.”

Did you know that Node.js “is the 8th most popular server-side programming language, with 34 languages of community support”?
